A group of Russian bikers set off on a ride from Moscow to Bulgaria, following the tracks of their ancestors, who fought in the Russo-Turkish war. The initiative is held under the flagship of the Trade & Economics Department of the Bulgarian Embassy in Moscow and the Bulgarian Agency for Tourism. The event is part of the celebrations for the 130-th anniversary of the Russo-Turkish war that set Bulgaria free from Turkish slavery. According to Mr. Leonid Shopov, director of the Embassy’s Trade & Economics Department, the event is part of a launching campaign for the popularization of the growing opportunities for tourism in Bulgaria. In the short ceremony preceding the start, Bulgarian Ambassador, Plamen Grozdanov wished the bikers good luck and many memorable moments during their journey in Bulgaria. Leonid Shopov reminded that the idea was born during a bikers gathering, held two months ago on the square in front of Moscow’s State University. Nineteen bikers are taking part in the trip, most of them traveling with their wives, while the rest have already accommodated their families in 4 or 5 star hotels on Bulgarian seaside. Bikes range from 650 cm3 to 1300 cm3 and their prices are comparable to these of luxury cars. The riders will follow the tracks of the Russian soldiers, who some 130 years ago, liberated Bulgaria from the Turkish slavery. The route starts in Ukraine, goes through Romania, and then reaches the city of Rousse. There they will be joined by Bulgarian bikers and the whole group will set off to Pleven, Gabrovo, Stara Zagora and the Shipka monument. The whole trip is supposed to end up on the Bulgarian seaside in Kavarna, where the bikers will watch the sunrise on the already popular “July Morning” festival (named after a Uriah Heep song). Main organizer of the event is the Russian bike club “STAR RIDERS RUSSIA” and its vice-president Andrei Bossovskii, who says the idea was born on a night gathering in April. The Russian bikers are carrying a special present for Bulgarian Prime minister Sergei Stanishev, who isn’t hiding his affection for powerful bikes. It is up to him to find free time, despite the current complicated political situation, and ride his bike together with the Russians to the Shipka monument for example. |
