Congratulations to Bulgaria on its admission to the European Union! Since 01 January 2007 Bulgaria is an official member of the European Union. Along with Romania both countries have been accepted to the big european family and are now official members of the EU.A ceremony marking Bulgaria's and Romania's accession to the European Union on January 1, 2007 took place in the centre of the Belgian capital on 13.12.2006. The ceremony was attended by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn, Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ivailo Kalfin, Romanian President Traian Basescu, Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, and the newly elected EU Commissioners Meglena Kuneva of Bulgaria and Leonard Orban of Romania. Addressing the ceremony, Barroso, speaking in Bulgarian and Romanian, extended cordial congratulations to Romania and Bulgaria on their admission to the EU. "We are very happy to welcome Bulgaria and Romania to the European family," he said. Rehn also warmly congratulated the two new Member States and said he was pleased to see so many young people among the crowd."I feel very excited to be here, with you, near this famous Brussels square, gathered to celebrate the admission of Bulgaria and Romania to the European Union," Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev said. "We have come a long way, transforming both ourselves and our country, to become part of the European Union, to become part of the unification of the Eastern and Western parts of Europe. United, we will achieve a lot more," he emphasized. "We Bulgarians have every reason to be proud. Our place in the European Union has yet to bear fruit. Congratulations on our entry," Stanishev stressed. The celebrations in Brussels have continued with various events. |
